Themes and Weeks
JUNE 13–17: CLASS FULL
IMPRESSIONISM: After learning about the styles of master Impressionists, such as, Monet, Boudin and Degas we will get as close to en plein air painting as possible. With the use of photographic resources, a sunlit studio and our own styles of painting, our goal will be to accomplish several paintings within the week. Interior and outdoor images will be available for each student to choose from. Our canvas sizes will vary.
JUNE 20–24: CLASS FULL
ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM: Let's express our own abstract works with the use of bold line, shapes and color. These canvases will be quite large to accommodate our creative energy and expression! We will view the works of De Kooning, Kline, Gorky and Kandinsky.
JUNE 27– JULY 1: CLASS FULL
SOUTHWEST LANDSCAPES: We will be traveling to the warm air and subdued colors of the southwest via our paint boxes and easels to see the images that inspired artist, Georgia O'Keeffe. Cactus, skull bones, desert flowers, adobe houses and the varied landscape of New Mexico await us as we prepare our canvases and palettes.
JULY 11–15: CLASS FULL
INTUITIVE PAINTING: Let's explore the freedom of our own expression with our favorite colors, color creations and sense of spacial awareness. On large canvases with acrylics, we will water down colors for a watercolor effect, as well as, explore the thickness of paint by mixing in sculpting mediums. Our goal will be to play with the texture and color of paint and create several one of a kind works.
JULY 18–22: CLASS FULL
NORTH CAROLINA LANDSCAPES: From coast to coast and the Piedmont we will choose our favorite sites to develop a one of a kind painting with watercolor, oils and acrylics.
Our goal will be to accomplish one painting each camp day. Resources will include a broad selection of imagery to make our initial sketches from.
AUGUST 1–5: CLASS FULL
STILL LIFE WITH OILS: With an eye to proportion, detail and shadow we will strive to blend our colors to create a smooth or impasto finish. By using rich colors and varied techniques our goal will be to accomplish several paintings during the week. We'll look at the paintings of Rembrant and Vermeer: as well as, the work of contemporary artists.
AUGUST 8–12: CLASS FULL
EGG TEMPERA AND GLAZE MEDIUMS: Dating back to the first century AD, this is an ancient form of painting. It is a long lasting process of binding pigments together with either egg yolk or sizing. It is permanent and fast drying and one is able to build up layers with the glaze. We will explore the medium with an added effect of gold leaf
transfer to our works. Our goal will be to complete several paintings within the week.
